Piazza Market on Vallejo Street closed on Tuesday. As I reported last month North Beach could lose a critical street on it’s southern edge. Several North Beach businesses were in play and the future of the Vallejo between Columbus and Stockton was in doubt.
Now another critical space is up for grabs further unsettling the stability of this Vallejo block. I commented about the Market’s closure earlier this week.
Friday’s SF Chronicle report by Paolo Lucchesi has brought new interest to the situation. Here’s my reaction to Paolo’s piece.
I can’t say I’m sad it’s closed. It devolved into a space for infrequent private parties. The folks who ran the “market” own the building. I think they hoped for a business bump from the new Poet’s Piazza planned for the block in front of the National Shrine of Saint Francis on the other side of Columbus. Unfortunately, after 5 years of wrangling and fundraising no date has been set for the start of the piazza construction.
I haven’t given up on North Beach. There still are great old institutions like Little City Meats on Vallejo at Stockton and new comers like Little Vines on Upper Grant with a great selection of cheeses, salumi and other food finds. Newer Italian immigrants have brought new life to the neighborhood. On just one block of Green between Columbus and Grant Vicoletto cooks up great authentic Calabrian food, BaoNecci is a great pizzeria run by a young family from northern Tuscany, and Sotto Mare is a great old-style North Beach fish restaurant. They make what many think is the best cioppino in the city. And there’s Park Tavern on Washington Square rated one of the best new restaurants of 2011.
This block of Vallejo is critical to maintaining what’s left of North Beach. Capos the new deep-dish pizza from Tony’s Pizza will open a couple of doors away. Across the street Geppetto the new Italian deli will soon open next to Pinocchio’s on the corner of Columbus. Looks like Victoria Pastry will stay on the corner of Stockton after a successful lease negotiation.
I hope something worthwhile will take root in this space that is critical to the preservation of what’s left of North Beach. I’ll keep reporting on what’s happening in North Beach and sharing some of the great spots that continue in the tradition of the Italian and arts community that makes North Beach special.
