An Arthur Avenue Shopping Adventure

When I’m in Manhattan one morning is set aside for a visit to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. If you want to experience a vibrant Italian-American food neighborhood with a distinctly southern Italian flavor, this is the place to go.
When we make the 20-minute drive, my friends and I are on a mission. We’ve got a shopping list for what we’ll eat later in the day. This time we we’re putting together a quick and easy antipasti.
After lunch we headed to Caffe De Lillo for espresso to finalize our shopping list. The Caffe was bustling. The chatter was in Italian at many tables.
We ate a big lunch so we wanted something light for dinner. We didn’t want to wait to get into the markets so we headed to the indoor Retail Market. Bringing butchers, Italian delis, green grocers and other merchants together under one roof was Mayor LaGuardia’s idea.
Mike’s Deli was our choice. They make their own porchetta. The woman behind the counter sliced some for us to taste. It was moist and gently scented with rosemary. Sold, we got a half-pound. The smoked mozzarella was gorgeous and we had to have one. Prosciutto di parma, gorgonzola dolce, roasted peppers and marinated artichokes rounded out our antipasti dinner.
Oh, I forgot. We got a fresh buratta at the cheese shop next door. A mozzarella exterior held a buttery ricotta interior. We got our bread with sesame seeds at the orginal Addeo’s Bakery. The bastone had a great chewy crust and an airy center, just perfect.
A few bottles of wine and some sfogliatelle (a Neapolitan pastry) from Modonia Family Bakery and we were ready to head back to Manhattan to enjoy another feast!
